From 1871 to 1918, the border between France and Germany ran through the southern part. There are several geological similarities between the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. The Vosges Mountains consist mainly of granite and red sandstone. The flora in the French Vosges Mountains is very diverse. For example, 25 species of orchids bloom on the lowlands alone. In the higher parts of the mountainous landscape, you can find the yellow-flowered gentian. In addition, various species of periwinkle and wild roses can be found in the lowlands. Laurel and honeysuckle provide a nice variety. In addition, depending on the ground, we will see mushrooms, blackberry and raspberry bushes and, of course, blueberries, locally called "brimbelles," the symbol of the Vosges Mountains. So for our outdoor cooking experience, we will also be sure to look for red fruits and mirabelles, to traditionally incorporate into a dish.
Where we go hiking in the Vosges Mountains is very quiet and in the back. This gives us the unique opportunity to spot wildlife you don't often encounter, such as a wild cat, lynx, grouse or wolf.....
The French Vosges is a medium-high mountain range located in northeastern France. The mountain range runs from the border of Switzerland to the north across the western side of the Rhine Valley. The French also call the rounded peaks of the mountains "ballons," French for spherical mountains. The Vosges Mountains are divided into:
In the Vosges Mountains, there are several meteorological differences between the eastern and western areas. For example, the annual rainfall is much higher and the average temperature much lower in the west than in the east. On average, snow falls on more than ninety days a year.
Because of its geographical location, the Vosges Mountains have experienced numerous historical and cultural influences. In fact, the Vosges Mountains lie at the crossroads of several major cultures and the natural boundary between the Latin and Germanic civilizations.
