Nature, fauna & flora of the Belgian Ardennes

The Ardennes is a densely forested low mountain / medium mountain area. This makes it an attractive habitat for several wild animals. Animals such as beavers, black storks, wild boars, deer and birds of prey can be seen here quite often.

Geographical information

Belgium is divided into three parts; Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels Capital Region. By far the largest part of Wallonia consists of the Belgian Ardennes. This forested low mountain range / middle mountain range has been a popular vacation destination with the Dutch for decades. But residents of surrounding countries also like to go on vacation there. The Ardennes can be roughly divided into 18 regions. These regions vary mainly in cultural and culinary aspects. For example, did you know that a small part of the Ardennes is located in northern Luxembourg and France? The natural beauty is equally breathtaking in each region. If you want to enjoy beautiful scenery and tranquility; this is the place to be!

History of the Belgian Ardennes

The Ardennes are famous for World War II. In the winter of 1944 - 1945, the last major offensive of the German army was here. Fighting was especially fierce in and around Bastogne. And in the Middle Ages, the Ardennes were even notorious; Petrarch crossed the Ardennes forest in 1333, on his way back from Liège to Italy, and called it "so dark that it strikes the soul with rigidity." The further rich history of the Ardennes can be seen today in its impressive castles, beautiful monasteries and ruins.
